What Sonny Cumbie said as his first spring practice with Louisiana Tech football begins

RUSTON - The Sonny Cumbie era at Louisiana Tech football began Tuesday with the start of spring practice.

Cumbie was introduced as the new coach on Dec. 2, and has hit the ground running. He attended high school football games, traveled around the country to recruit players and build a new staff while still showing up to support the rest of the La Tech sport programs.

"We've been meeting and walking through as much as they'll allow us to per the rules and just trying to get our guys prepared for spring practice that first one," Cumbie told the News-Star. "I think it comes in phases, the first five practices you're trying to teach, you're trying to install, you're trying to get everything taught that you're going to do and see what your players can learn."

Cumbie was the offensive coordinator at Texas Tech last season and served as the Red Raiders' interim coach for the final five games, going 2-3 including a dominating win over Mississippi State in the Liberty Bowl.

The Bulldogs were 3-9 last season and fired Skip Holtz.

The first practice at Joe Aillet Stadium was comprised of a lot of stations, allowing the staff to get even more personal with the players.

Cumbie made some additions to the roster on March 9 through the transfer portal, but for now the focus is on making the team that they have better.

"I would say that our roster is probably 90%, 95% done," Cumbie said. "I think that this is the roster that we have moving forward, and you're always going to look to add anyone that comes across your plate that you feel like can make your team a better player, better team at certain positions, but I'm really excited about our roster right now and looking to develop those guys."
