Sons of Anarchy boss Kurt Sutter has cleared up one of the show's biggest mysteries.

Kurt acted as showrunner on the FX series which ended in 2014 and has been answering fan questions about the show on social media recently.

One question posed to Kurt by a fan surrounded the mysterious death of Jax's (Charlie Hunman) dad John 'JT' Teller which preludes the first season.

During the entire Sons of Anarchy run, fans never found out how John actually died — though there was speculation John either died by suicide or was murdered by Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman) and his ex-wife Gemma Teller Morrow (Katey Segal), after Gemma told Jax that Clay tried to kill John in season 4 episode 'Brick'.

So, what's the real story?

Well, according to Kurt, the mystery regarding John Teller's method of death was never meant to be solved; providing the basis for Jax's angst throughout the series.

"You're not supposed to figure it out," Kurt said.

"That was the existential drift that haunted Jax. And now you."

Tragically, Sons of Anarchy ended with the death of Jax, meaning he would never find out the true story behind his father's death.

In better news, Sons of Anarchy fans can still get their fix with spin-off show Mayans MC, which has recently been renewed for a third season.
