Sony Just Unveiled a 98-Inch 8K TV That Costs $70,000

The past two decades have been nothing if not a steady slide in prices for increasingly better-quality televisions. But no one told that to the executives at Sony, as they've just unveiled a brand-new TV that's retailing for a whooping $70,000. The Sony Master Series Z9G 8K HDR OLED TV will be offered in two sizes: the 98-inch (which will cost $69,999.99) and the 85-inch (which, by stark contrast, will cost $12,999.99). Which is all to say that with the 85-inch option, consumers retain 87% of the diagonal screen size while paying only 19% of the 98-inch television's price.

Yet tech lovers with deep pockets will truly care about only the 98-inch version, as it's also being touted as Sony's new flagship model. Of course, much of the uptick in price comes from the fact that OLED technology is being used on a screen that's just over eight feet long. OLED (which stands for "organic light emitting diodes") gives off its own light, which allows for a higher quality compared to LCD TV's in terms of brightness and the darker areas of the picture.

The Z9G series will have support for Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit3 later this year. Both sizes of the Sony Master Series Z9G 8K HDR OLED TV will be available in June.
