Sony says the PlayStation 5 shortage is over

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan has announced the PlayStation 5 (PS5) shortage is over.
During their annual CES press conference, which was streamed on Wednesday, Ryan thanked those who have been waiting for a PS5.
“We truly appreciate the support and patience of the PlayStation community as we managed unprecedented demand amid global challenges over the past two years,” he expressed.

“PS5 supply improved towards the end of last year,” the CEO stated, referring to the restock near the end of December. “I’m happy to share that December was the biggest month ever for PS5 console sales and that we’ve now sold more than 30 million units through to consumers worldwide,” he shared.
“Everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at retailers globally starting from this point forward.”
In addition to easier access to PS5s, Sony also announced more “blockbuster games” for the console, including “Final Fantasy XVI,” “Hogwarts Legacy” and “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2."

The end of the PS5 shortage could allow the console to reach nine-digit sales figures like its predecessors.
After its initial release on Nov. 12, 2020, the PlayStation 5 faced a shortage due to its high demand and a global chip shortage that impacted Sony and other electronic manufacturers. Although re-stocks gave buyers an opportunity to get their hands on the console, the sporadic nature of its availability at retailers continued to plague the console’s release.
PSVR2, PlayStation’s virtual reality headset, is also set for release on Feb. 22 at an introductory price of $549.99.
