SAULT STE. MARIE — The Soo Theatre Project group is hard at work restoring the Soo Theatre downtown, and the most recent work at the historical site includes restoring a classic marquee.

For many years, the Soo Theatre was a popular community hub in downtown Sault Ste. Marie. Over the course of more than 90 years, the theater has been host to thousands of plays, concerts and movie screenings. Before it closed in 2003 it was the only place on the Michigan side of the city to find a movie theater.

In 2021, Soo Theatre Project Inc. began a major renovation project to fully restore the appearance of the old theater with help from local donations.

Part of the renovations included removing the marquee from the outside of the building.

Returning the building to its classic look was one of the major aspects of the project, and the marquee is one of the most recognizable parts of the restoration.

The old sign was removed last month and was replaced with a brand new marquee that is a replica of the second marquee ever used by the theater.
