Studies show that aromatherapy candles really do work to quell anxiety and can even improve sleep. Aromatherapy has been around for thousands of years across numerous cultures, and the use of essential oils dates back to at least 10th-century Persia. It works by stimulating the nose’s smell receptors, which send messages to the limbic system, the area of the brain that regulates emotions. Thus a scented candle can be an ideal way to take the edge off the day and relax.

Watch along as In The Know’s Phoebe Zaslav makes a super simple lavender scented candle.

“Lavender is found to effectively reduce anxiety, restlessness, agitation, symptoms of depression and pretty much anything you can think of that would cause you stress,” Phoebe explains.

What You’ll Need:

  • 2 cups soy wax chips

  • 50 to 80 drops lavender essential oil

  • Candlewick

  • Chopsticks or popsicle sticks

  • Mason jar or mug

Phoebe’s Steps:

First, Phoebe melts the soy wax in a pot on low to medium heat. She stirs the mixture using one of her chopsticks to ensure it melts down evenly.

Next, she adds the lavender essential oil. Don’t be afraid to use a heavy hand — the more fragrant, the better your candle will be.

Phoebe wraps the candlewick around her second chopstick, which will help keep the wick standing up straight.

To anchor the wick, she pours a tablespoon of the hot wax into the mason jar and places one end of the wick in it. She rests the chopstick on top of the rim to keep the wick in place. Then she puts the jar in the fridge for 10 minutes to harden.

Phoebe pours the rest of the hot wax into the jar while keeping the wick anchor in place. She then refrigerates the candle for an hour so that it can solidify. All she has to do next is cut the wick anchor off with some scissors and she has the perfect scented candle!

“This entire process took me under an hour and a half,” Phoebe says. “This candle will really help ease your anxieties and keep you zen.”
