Sophia Smith, Lindsey Horan & other Portland Thorns await Olympics fate originally appeared on NBC Sports Northwest

With the 2020 Olympics less than a month away, all eyes are on new USWNT coach Vlatko Andonovski on which Portland Thorns FC players will make the final, 18-player roster.

Steph Yang of The Athletic wrote five Portland players are locks to make the team: goalkeeper Adrianna Franch, defenders Crystal Dunn, Becky Sauerbrunn, and midfielder Lindsey Horan.

Any of the four missing the cut would be a massive shock since all have been longtime members of the American national team: Franch has 2 clean sheets in 5 international appearances, Horan has 20 goals and 33 assists in 98 appearances, Sauerbrunn is a former captain of the senior team with 186 caps and Dunn has 24 goals and 18 assists in 114 appearances.

All four were members of the 2019 USWNT who won the World Cup in France.

Where it gets tricky is the status of Thorns FC forward Sophia Smith, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NWSL College Draft.

Yang wrote Smith “should be part of a 23-player roster” given stellar play at the NWSL level and likely being a staple of the national team for years to come.

However, she played sparingly in the last three friendlies, which appears to be a lack of confidence from Andonovski in the 20-year-old.

Considering her expected growth, expect Smith to make the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
