Sophie Turner 'hated' the Jonas Brothers before meeting husband Joe Jonas

Sophie Turner may officially be a Jonas now, after marrying the Jonas Brothers singer Joe Jonas in May 2019. But, the 24-year-old admits that she “hated” the band prior to meeting her husband.

“My friends and I were not Jonas Brothers fans,” Turner told Elle for both its UK and US April cover stories.

“There was this band in the UK called Busted,” she explained in the US piece. “They had a hit called ‘Year 3000.’ It was amazing, and we were huge Busted fans.

“Then the Jonas Brothers covered the song and made it massive. And Busted broke up. We thought it was all the Jonas Brothers’ fault. So we hated them.”

The song famously catapulted Joe, alongside his brothers Nick Jonas and Kevin Jonas, into the spotlight when they were just teenagers. Years later, Turner would find herself in a similar situation when she was cast in the HBO hit series Game of Thrones at just 15 years old. And although she imagined the brothers to be jaded pop stars, she ultimately found that she was more similar to them than she would have thought — especially when it came to Joe.

“I went to a meeting and Joe’s agent was in the room. And he was like, ‘You remind me of one of my clients. I bet you two would really hit it off,’” Turner recalled. When the Jonas Brothers were touring the UK later that year, Joe sent the actor a message, which led to the couple’s first date at a Camden bar.

“The best thing was that he didn’t bring security. He brought a friend and they drank just as hard as the rest of us,” she said. “I remember us two spending only a couple of minutes on the dance floor, and then we found a space in the far corner and we just talked. We talked for hours, and hours, and hours. And I wasn’t bored. It wasn’t contrived, it wasn’t small talk — it was just so easy. Soon, we were inseparable. And then I went on tour with him.”

The couple was engaged by their first anniversary, and thus Turner was thrust into the entire Jonas clan. Now, that group famously consists of all three of the brothers’s wives — including Turner, Nick’s wife Priyanka Chopra and Danielle “Dani” Deleasa Jonas, married to eldest brother Kevin.

“I need that,” she told Elle US of the big family, “because I like to feel like I belong to something that’s, like, bigger than just me.”

In both pieces, she adds, “It’s also nice to have built-in girlfriends who are actually really cool, who I can hang out with and we can really talk to each other about, like, how crazy the boys’ lives are. We can relate on so many different levels. It’s like, thank God, because you never know [about your in-laws].”

Elle notes that reports of Turner’s pregnancy started hitting newsfeeds in early February, just as the two interviews went to print. Although Turner wasn’t able to confirm the news with the publication, she still gushed over her hubby.

“With Joe, I always felt like I was the one who was punching, like, way above my league. And I still feel like that,” she said. “He’s so handsome, talented, funny, charismatic. I’m really lucky to be with him and have someone like him want to be around me and spend time with me.”
