Sorority sponsors online King celebration meeting

In celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr., (MLK) Day of Service, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. (AKA), Oak Ridge Chapter, will present its 34th annual Community Speaks Program at 9:45 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, via Zoom webinar.

The theme this year is “100 Dreams Around the World, Visions of Infinite Hope.” Larrissa Henderson, Oak Ridge Schools' director of pupil services, is the keynote speaker, according to a news release.

Henderson holds a B.S. degree in Elementary Education, M.S. degree in Reading Education, and two Ed.D. degrees in Administration and Supervision and Leadership Studies, respectively, all from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She has 47 years of experience as an educator and school administrator, including interim assistant superintendent of the Oak Ridge Schools. Henderson is the current president of the Oak Ridge Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and president of the National Association of Pupil Services Administrators (NAPSA). Henderson has two adult children who reside in Atlanta, and a granddaughter who is earning an MBA at Middle Tennessee State University, according to the release.

Jaice Caver, social media digital strategist at BGrace Media and one of the newest AKA members, will serve as mistress of ceremonies. Caver is from Marbury, Ala., and she earned a B.S. degree in News Media and Communication Studies from the University of Alabama and a M.S. degree in Journalism and Electronic Media from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Caver loves to hang out with friends, have family gatherings and travel.

“Keep the Dream Alive” scholarships will be awarded to area high school seniors nominated by the Oak Ridge Schools SECME Program and the Men of Tomorrow Program Foundation. This year’s program is co-sponsored by UCOR, an Amentum-led partnership with Jacobs, and Oak Valley Baptist Church and supported by Church Women United.
