Sorry, Collierville: Whataburger isn't coming to town — for now

Collierville will not get a Whataburger — for now.

The Texas-based burger joint withdrew its application for consideration Jan. 14, citing traffic issues in the town, said Jennifer Casey, Collierville's public information officer.

"They couldn't get access to that east shopping center that they wanted to be able to secure," Casey said. "They were wanting to connect to the shopping center behind the Chick-fil-A as well as Poplar Avenue."

Whataburger intended to locate at 1088 W. Poplar Ave., in between Firestone Auto Care shop and Chick-fil-A, where it planned to serve its famous fresh-never-frozen beef burgers 24 hours a day.

The fast food restaurant wanted to have a connection from its building to Poplar Avenue and the Collierville Marketplace, a strip of businesses along Market Boulevard, but the idea was unfeasible.

So, Whataburger backed off.

Whataburger did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.

Casey said Whataburger would contact the town again if it found another site, but for now nothing is planned.

The Collierville location was one of five planned Whataburgers in the Memphis area.
