Pixar’s Soul is coming back in the form of a Disney Plus short.

The 2020 animated film centred around Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx), a music teacher who tries to reconnect his soul with his body after falling down a manhole cover and dying.

In the Disney Pixar adventure, Joe’s soul meets the cynical and sarcastic soul 22 (voiced by Tina Fey), who has never been able to find her spark before.

Now, an original spin-off short titled 22 vs Earth will show what life was like for the soul before she met Joe and her previous attempts to break the rules of The Great Before.

Fey will once again voice the character in the special, which comes to Disney Plus on 30 April.

Director Kevin Nolting said: “While making Soul, we talked about the why of a new soul not wanting to live on Earth, but it didn’t ultimately belong in that movie.

22 vs Earth was a chance to explore some of the unanswered questions we had about why 22 was so cynical. As a fairly cynical person myself, it felt like perfect material.”

Soul is nominated for three awards at this Sunday’s Oscars, including Best Animated Feature.

Earlier this month, it won Best Animated Feature, as well as the gong for Best Original Music, at the Bafta Film awards.

22 vs Earth is available from 30 April on Disney Plus.
