Theatrical legends Rodgers & Hammerstein’s final collaboration, "The Sound of Music," remains one of the most popular musicals of all time, which is precisely why Oak Ridge Playhouse chose to showcase it this season. Set to open Nov. 18, and running select dates through Dec. 4, this highly-anticipated favorite is already close to selling out.

With a book by Howard Lindsay & Russel Crouse, the inspiring story is based on the Austrian heroine, Maria von Trapp and her 1949 memoir, "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers."

Set in the mountains of Austria before the Anschluss in 1938, the story follows Maria Rainer (Casey Maxwell), an exuberant postulant from Nonnberg Abbey who becomes governess to seven seemingly rambunctious children longing for the attention of their father, retired naval commander, Captain von Trapp (Oliver Hoig). A young woman who needs a place, children who need a mother, and a widower who needs a wake-up call – all of whom need love. It’s only a matter of time before everyone’s needs are realized, hearts are won over and a family comes together just in time to escape the impending invasion by the Nazis.

This production features classic songs that any musical theater fan will recognize, including “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Edelweiss,” and the title song “The Sound of Music.” In addition, those only familiar with the film will be delighted to hear two additional songs included in the stage version, which serve as an integral part of the plotline.

With a stellar design crew, this beloved production offers a refreshing take on a familiar classic that will not disappoint, including an innovative new rendition of the infamous mountain scape.

Tickets are selling fast, so be sure to purchase online at www.orplayhouse.com, or call the box office at (865) 482-4877, noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

This production is made possible through additional support from the Tennessee Arts Commission and is being supported, in whole or in part, by federal award number SLFRP5534 awarded to the State of Tennessee by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
