‘Sounded like a scene from Jumanji:’ Monkeys escape from home in south Georgia

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia Department of Natural Resources are asking residents to be on alert after two monkeys escaped from their home.

On Sunday, the Effingham County Sheriff Department received a call about monkeys being on the loose.

Officials said they are 2 patas monkeys, which are some of the fastest in the world. The animals can reach speeds of up to 30 mph in just seconds.

The monkeys are legally owned, and the owners have been contacted.

The patas monkeys were last seen in northern Effingham County.

“Although they are not believed to be dangerous, they are wild animals, and we cannot predict how they will respond if cornered,” the sheriff’s office said.
