The Diamondbacks and Druw Jones are in agreement on a deal worth the full slot amount — nearly $8.2 million —for the second overall pick, a source confirmed Tuesday.

Jones’ agreement was first reported by MLB.com’s Jim Callis, who said the bonus pool value for that selection is $8,189,400. The deal is pending a physical examination.

Jones, 18, a Georgia high school outfielder, was widely regarded as the top talent in the draft, a potential five-tool star. He is the son of Andruw Jones, the Atlanta Braves legend who won 10 Gold Glove awards during a 17-year career.

That the Diamondbacks reached an agreement with Jones marks a change from last year, when the club went down to the wire with its top pick, Jordan Lawlar, who did not agree to terms until a day before the signing deadline.

The Diamondbacks have a bonus pool worth more than $15 million, the second-largest in the draft to the Baltimore Orioles, who had the No. 1 overall pick. Teams can spend up to 5 percent over their bonus pool without losing future draft picks.

Jones’ agreement is the largest bonus the club has given to a draft pick in club history, exceeding the $6.7 million Lawlar received last year.

Jones figures to begin his pro career in short order, most likely in the Arizona Complex League.
