Source: Byron Leftwich set for second Jacksonville Jaguars head coaching interview Tuesday

The Jacksonville Jaguars have scheduled a second interview with Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich for Tuesday in person at an undisclosed location for the head coaching job, a person close to the situation confirmed Monday.

Leftwich, 42, becomes the second known finalist besides Indianapolis defensive assistant Matt Eberflus, who was interviewed for a second time last Thursday in Indianapolis.

A former quarterback, Leftwich was the seventh overall pick by the Jaguars in the 2003 NFL draft. He played his first 3 1/2 seasons with the Jaguars, starting 44 of 46 games.

Leftwich appears to be the frontrunner among the Jaguars fan base with many going on social media to express their support for him to get the job. Leftwich and the Buccaneers' push to repeat as Super Bowl champion ended Sunday with a crushing 30-27 loss to the Los Angeles Rams after a last-second 30-yard field goal by Rams' Matt Gay.

The Jaguars interviewed Leftwich for the first time on a Zoom virtual call on Jan. 7. Leftwich also interviewed for the vacant Chicago Bears head coaching job virtually this past Thursday.

He joined the Buccaneers as offensive coordinator in 2019 and won a Super Bowl last season with Tom Brady at quarterback. Leftwich started his coaching career with the Arizona Cardinals as quarterbacks coach under Bruce Arians in 2017.

During his season wrap up news conference Monday, Arians confirmed that if Leftwich was to get a head coaching job he could return to calling the offensive plays again.

Arians added that he would give an endorsement for either Leftwich or defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, who also interviewed for the Jaguars job.

''If they (interested teams) would ask, but they are not going to ask and I'm damn sure not calling them,'' Arians told reporters.

Hackett among finalists for Broncos job

Another potential Jaguars finalist could be Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Nathanial Hackett. Hackett is among the three finalists for the vacant Denver Broncos job and reportedly interviewed for a second time Monday.

Hackett spent four seasons with the Jaguars, first serving as quarterbacks coach in 2015 before getting promoted to offensive coordinator by former head coach Gus Bradley. Hackett remained offensive coordinator until the 2018 season when former coach Doug Marrone fired him after 11 games.

Eberflus, Caldwell among finalists for Bears job

Former Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell, who interviewed for the Jaguars job, is expected to get a second interview with the Chicago Bears.

Eberflus is also a finalist for the Bears job and is expected to be interviewed for a second time on Wednesday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who turned down an opportunity to interview with the Jaguars, has also been requested by the Bears for a second interview.

The Jaguars fired Urban Meyer on Dec. 16 after 13 games into his first season after having one embarrassing incident after the next, which included an allegation from former Jaguars kicker Josh Lambo that Meyer kicked him during a practice last August.

Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell was promoted to interim coordinator and was interviewed by the Jaguars for the job full time.

The Jaguars have also interviewed former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson, Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien.
