Sources: Southern Miss hiring Tulane offensive coordinator Will Hall as next head coach

After a tumultuous season that featured three different head coaches in three months, Southern Miss has found a permanent head coach of the future.

The school has finalized a deal to hire Tulane offensive coordinator Will Hall as its next head coach, according to Yahoo Sports sources. He is the son of Bobby Hall, a legendary Mississippi high school coach who won more than 300 games in his colorful career.

Hall had his final meeting with Southern Miss officials on Monday night and intends to inform his Tulane players of his new job after practice Wednesday morning. He’ll be introduced in Hattiesburg later on Wednesday.

Hall brings with him a pedigree of wide-open offenses and extensive experience in the Southern Miss footprint. Both his head coaching experience and deep ties to the state were appealing to Southern Miss, which endured one of the most tumultuous seasons in college football in 2020.

Hall has led Tulane to back-to-back top-30 seasons in scoring offense. In 2019, Hall’s offense broke the school record for total rushing. His prior FBS assistant coaching experience includes a year coordinating at Louisiana (2017) and spending 2018 as the Memphis tight ends coach.

Hall also brings significant head coaching experience. He spent three seasons as the head coach at both West Alabama (2011-13) and West Georgia (2014-16). He went 31-9 at West Georgia, a run that included two NCAA Division II semifinal appearances.

At West Alabama, he won two league titles, earned two NCAA Division II Playoff bids and went 25-11.

Hall brings extensive experience in Southern Miss’ footprint. He grew up in the state, won a state title playing for his father at Armory High School (1998) and was a two-time All-American quarterback at Northwest Mississippi Community College.

Hall went on to play at North Alabama, where he won the Harlan Hill Trophy in 2003 for the top player in Division II.
