An overnight fire in an apartment in the 2400 block of Buffalo Gap Road was contained to one unit but affected the utilities of another, according to an Abilene Fire Department news release.

Fire crews dispatched about 12:40 a.m. Friday reported heavy smoke and flames coming from a second-story apartment. They contained the fire to the original unit.

Residents were able to evacuate, but the utilities were turned off as a precaution for a second unit. The American Red Cross was notified to assist the five displaced people from the two units, AFD said.

The accidental fire caused about $5,000 in damage, the release said.
