South Abington Twp. to replace municipal building roof

May 13—For the first time since its construction in the late 1990s, the South Abington Twp. Municipal Building is getting a new roof.

Supervisors voted this week to award a $33,000 contract to H&P Construction Inc. of Kulpmont to replace the roughly 4,700-square-foot shingled roof atop the building on Shady Lane Road.

Although the roof has undergone routine maintenance and minor repairs over the years, it's the first full replacement since the building's construction in 1997, according to officials.

It was beginning to show its age and developing issues that needed to be addressed, Secretary JoAnne Pane said.

"We felt it necessary to use the allotted funds this year to facilitate that repair," she said, adding she is thrilled that the original construction allowed it to last so long.

The project is being funded through the township's general fund. No timeline has been set for the work.

Supervisor Vice Chair Mark Dougherty said the time was right to replace it.

"Since we had the opportunity and the funding, we figured it was a responsible thing to do," he said.
