South Africa truck crashes into 4 taxis, 1 car, kills 22 people

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - At least twenty-two people were killed in South Africa's Kwa-Zulu natal province on Thursday night when a truck crashed into four minibus taxis and a car, an emergency assistance spokesperson said. "An 18-wheeler truck was driving down...at the bottom it went right through the intersection and collided with four taxis and a car," Chris Botha, Netcare 911 spokesperson said from the accident scene. Botha said ten more people were injured critically while 22 had serious to minor injuries. There were no children involved in the accident and police were still investigating why the truck failed to stop at the intersection. The government has introduced tough laws to clamp down on reckless driving and poorly-maintained vehicles as it tries to curb an annual toll of some 14,000 deaths.
