South African Airways agrees deal, unions end strike

South African Airways reached a deal over wages with two unions on Friday (November 22).

Bringing an end to an eight-day strike that hit hundreds of flights run by the cash-strapped company.

State-owned SAA said unions agreed to a 5.9% wage hike dating back to April.

It will be paid from February 2020, subject to the availability of funds.

Talks on 900 planned job cuts have been deferred to end of January next year.

SAA has not turned a profit since 2011 and is without a permanent CEO.

It's one of a number of state-run firms battling tough financial conditions after years of poor governance and so-called "state capture" during Jacob Zuma's presidency.

The government has spent around 1.4 billion dollars in the past three years to support it.

SAA said it might not make salary payments this month.

It will restore a full flight schedule this weekend.
