South African Airways cancels flights in fight for survival

Cash-strapped South African Airways has canceled some domestic and international flights as it fights to survive a financial crisis that's hit several state entities, caused by nearly a decade of mismanagement.

The carrier stopped some flights from its Johannesburg hub to Cape Town and Durban, as well as to the German city of Munich.

It's been waiting for the government to provide two billion rand, or $137 million, promised when the airline entered a form of bankruptcy protection last month.

But so far the emergency funding has not materialized.

In a statement, SAA said the cancellations represent a quote "responsible strategy to conserve cash and optimize the airline's position," adding that it will be reviewing further schedule amendments over the coming days.
