Netflix's "Stranger Things" is a global hit, but one small scene in season four is creating its own sensation for South Aiken High School.

The scene is midway through episode six. In it, a townhall meeting is convened to discuss an active serial killer investigation. A young antagonist calls on the citizens to start a manhunt. In response, one man gets out of his seat, walks to the exit, turns to the onlooking crowd and shouts "Well, what are y'all just sitting around for?! You heard the kid!" He walks out, only to be followed by the majority in the crowded room.

Adam Murray of Atlanta has a role in "Stranger Things" season four, episode six. He's gaining notoriety with the South Aiken High School community in Aiken, S.C., because of his choice of T-shirt.
Adam Murray of Atlanta has a role in "Stranger Things" season four, episode six. He's gaining notoriety with the South Aiken High School community in Aiken, S.C., because of his choice of T-shirt.

The man in question, in the role of "Angry Townsperson #2," is wearing a T-shirt that says "South Aiken Thoroughbreds," the school's mascot and a shirt that was sold in the 1980s. Screenshots of the image began circulating online, and alumni have been ecstatic.

"It brought many of us back to our high school days (when the shirt was worn)," said class of 1989 graduate Melanie Inabinet.

"I was very excited to see our small town school represented in a series so big!" said Holly Kirkland, a class of 1996 graduate.

"Angry Townsperson #2" is played by Adam Murray, an Atlanta comedian, who said the shirt was one of a couple options provided by the costume department, and he thought the shirt was not only cooler looking, but was also going to keep him cool.

"The other option they were leaning towards was a blank looking sweater … in that scene, I'm wearing long jeans, an undershirt, the Aiken shirt, and then almost like a flannel on top of that, and then that denim jacket that's lined with wool … we filmed that for 16 hours in May in Atlanta during COVID, so they couldn't use the air-conditioning in the building. They had to pump in A/C from a truck outside," Murray said.

The fourth season was released on May 27, and in the weeks that have followed, hundreds of alumni have reached out to ask how Murray got the shirt, share photos of their old fan gear that bear similar designs, and praise Murray for giving their beloved school a shout out in a major television series.

Members of the school have re-created the retro shirt to sell as a fundraiser for South Aiken Athletics Booster Club. They have also invited Murray to Aiken to help sell the shirts and sign autographs, and some alumni have even contributed by covering his travel expenses in order to come.

Murray added a Facebook post late Tuesday showing a freshly printed stack of photographs from the scene with the comment, "I just picked these up from the printer! They came out so cool! I should have some envelopes and a silver sharpie coming in tomorrow so I can send out autographs again to anyone that wants them!!"

Murray expressed how mind-blowing it's been to have such an effect on a community he's never even been to.

"It's absolutely amazing," he said. "The whole reason to get into stand-up and acting is to bring people joy. This is definitely doing that, and if it leads to benefiting the kids, I'm all for it."

The retro shirts are for sale for $15 via the South Aiken Athletics Booster Club page with Carolina Screenprint in Aiken. Further details of the visit have yet to be released.

"Stranger Things" season four: volume two comes out on Netflix on Friday, July 1.
