The announcement came just one day after Major Applewhite announced five staff promotions.

Paul Petrino will take over as wide receivers coach for South. He was most recently the Central Michigan offensive coordinator over the past two seasons. He also spent nine seasons at the University of Idaho as head coach.

Petrino also has made stops as an offensive coordinator at Arkansas, Illinois and Louisville. He coached the Atlanta Falcons wide receivers in 2007 when his brother, Bobby, was head coach.

Effrem Reed will be the South Alabama running backs coach. He comes to Mobile by way of East Lansing, where he spent the last four years with Michigan State. He coached the Spartans running backs over the last two seasons.

Reed played running back at Louisiana, and he started his coaching career there when he was director of player engagement before he became a defensive graduate assistant.

Jason Onyebuagu will lead the offensive line unit for the Jags. His last job was at Jackson State, where he was co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach last season.

Before Jackson State, Onyebuagu was the tight ends coach at Northern Illinois, his alma mater, for two seasons. He’s also had coaching stops at North Carolina, Arkansas Pine Bluff and North Carolina Central.
