MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — South Alabama is finalizing a deal to make Major Applewhite the head football coach.

The news was first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Applewhite will become the fourth head coach in South Alabama football history.

He has been at South since 2021 as offensive coordinator under former Jags head coach Kane Wommack, who took the Alabama defensive coordinator position on Monday night.

Applewhite’s coaching career dates back to 2003 when he was first a graduate assistant with his alma mater, the University of Texas.

He’s made stops at Texas, Syracuse, Rice, Alabama and Houston.

He was the head coach of the Cougars from 2017-2018 and finished with a 15-11 record. He now gets his second crack at a head coaching job with the Jags.
