South Bay crash stalls MTS service; power restored to hundreds

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — A vehicle collision in Chula Vista Tuesday morning handicapped MTS’ Trolley service in the South Bay and left hundreds without power.

The crash was reported just before 2:30 a.m. on Oxford Street in Chula Vista near Palomar Street Transit Center. The Chula Vista Fire Department said at least one person was injured in the incident, although details of the injury have not been confirmed by authorities.

Over 2,600 households in Nestor, San Ysidro and Otay Mesa lost power as a result of the crash, according to San Diego Gas & Electric’s Outage Map.

Among the customers impacted is the Oxford Street branch of the San Diego County Health and Human Services (HHSA) agency, which led to the department suspending services for the first part of the day.

As of 11 a.m., most of the customers in this area have had their power restored, with 517 customers remaining. Power for the remaining SDG&E customers is anticipated to be back up and running by 5 p.m., the utility company said.

MTS also began operating a modified service through the area due to the crash, shuttling passengers at stations between San Ysidro and H Street in both directions. As of 7:20 a.m., regular MTS service has been resumed with slight delays.

In a statement, however, MTS said that Trolley Service will again be halted around noon between the H Street and Palm Avenue stations to allow for SDG&E to conduct electrical grid repairs. A bus bridge between the two stations will be in place during the work.

MTS encouraged riders to check the agency’s X account or website to get up-to-date information on the suspension. Riders can also call the transit agency’s Information and Trip Planning department at 619-233-3004.

While the HHSA branch is closed, those who need to access services can visit another location in the county or use one of the various hotlines available, county officials.
