South Bend Cubs begin holiday-week homestand

The South Bend Cubs (41-32) will host the the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (42-30) this week in a slightly altered homestand in Class High A minor league baseball at Four Winds Field.

Normally an off day, the Cubs will play the Timber Rattlers on Monday, July 4, with post-game fireworks. Every fan through the gate will receive a Stanz Mustard giveaway and fans will have an opportunity to bid on game-worn patriotic jerseys with proceeds to benefit Ronald McDonald Charities of Michiana. Game starts at 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 5.

After taking Tuesday as on off day, the Cubs and the Timber Rattlers will continue their series on Wednesday at 7:05 with gates opening at 6.

Wednesday's game will feature a special appearance by Chicago Cubs All-Star and Gold Glove catcher Jody Davis. The first 1,000 fans 21 and older through the gates will receive a South Bend Cubs trucker hat.

Thursday's game (7:05) will be thirsty Thursday, featuring $2 domestic draft beer and $2 fountain drinks. Friday's game (7:05) will be Girls Scouts Night and also include post-game fireworks. Saturday's game (7:05) will include Spin to Win prizes and be Tiki Night, celebrating all things tropical.

Sunday's homestand finale (2:05) will include Marvel's Defenders on the Diamond, with players wearing special Marvel jerseys. There will be a special appearance by The Hulk. It is also Sunday Funday where fans can meet players during an autograph session from 12:15 to 1 p.m. and play catch on the field from 12:45 to 1:10.

As of Friday night, the Cubs were on their longest winning streak of the season at nine after knocking down the Beloit Sky Carp, 8-5. The Cubs are unbeaten at 7-0 in the Midwest League's second half, leading the division by one game over the Timber Rattlers.

Clubhouse leaders include right fielder Owen Caissie (.269) with 59 hits, including 13 doubles, six home runs and 42 RBI. Left fielder Yohendrick Pinango (.263) has 70 hits with 16 doubles, 10 home runs and 41 RBI. Shortshop Fabian Pertuz (.251) had 61 hits with 19 doubles, two triples, four homers and 39 RBI. Joe Nahas has a 3-2 pitching record with a 4.64 ERA.
