South Bend Cubs homestand includes Teacher Appreciation Night, salute to Blue Socks

The South Bend Cubs (28-23) return home to Four Winds Field this week to host the Midwest League East Division leading Cedar Rapids Kernels (33-18)  beginning Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in High A minor league baseball action.

Tuesday's promotions include Triple Play Tuesday (game ticket, hot dog and 24 ounce fountain drink for $13 in advance or $14 day of game). Tickets can be purchased in advance online at SouthBendCubs.com  or by caling the Box Office at 574-235-9988. Tuesday (7 p.m. start) is also Tail Wagging Tuesday when fans can bring their dogs to the park.

Wednesday is the annual Teacher Appreciation Night when the Cubs recognize Michiana educators and school administrators in Michiana. Teachers and administrators can claim two free tickets to attend Wednesday's game, which begins at 7 p.m. Tickets can be claimed by visiting the Box Office  and presenting their school identification card. Picking them up in advance is encouraged.

Thursday's game (7 p.m.) will feature Thirsty Thursday ($2 domestic draft beer and $2 24-ounce fountain drinks). It is also All-American Girls Professional Baseball League Night, with a special celebration of the women who played baseball for the South Bend Blue Socks.

Friday (7 p.m.) is Fantastic Fireworks Friday.

Saturday (7 p.m.) is Spin to Win Saturday when fans have a chance to win a PS5, Xbox One, 50'' TV or an iPad.

Sunday (2 p.m.), fans can meet SB Cubs in a pre-game autograph session from 12:15 to 1 p.m. and play catch on the field from 12:45 p.m. to 1:10 p.m. Also, the first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive a SB Cubs logo baseball.

The Cubs clubhouse leaders include outfielder Yohendrick Pinango, who is batting .267 with a .477 slugging percentage. He has 47 hits with 10 doubles, nine home runs and 31 RBI. Outfielder Owen Caissie has 32 hits with eight doubles, four homers and 29 RBI while shortstop Fabian Pertuz had 37 hits with 11 doubles, three home runs and 22 RBI. Third baseman Luis Verugo had 28 hits with nine doubles and nine RBI.

Pitcher Manuel Espinoza is 3-2 with a 1.47 ERA. He's pitched 43 innings with 48 strikeouts. Joe Nahas is 2-1, also pitching 43 innings with 41 strikeouts.

Caissie and left-handed pitcher DJ Herz picked accolades Monday, with Caissie being named the Chicago Cubs minor league player of the month and Herz earning Midwest League Pitcher of the Week.

Caissie hit .313 for the month of May with four total homers and 26 RBI. Efforts included hits in nine of his last 10 games. The 19-year-old from Canada is now regarded as the Cubs number eight overall prospect.

Herz picked up his first win on May 26 against the Great Lakes Loons with five shutout innings, allowing one hit with three strikeouts. He then followed up on June 1 against the Dayton Dragons with 12 strikeouts. In total, Herz has started 10 games and has a 1.45 ERA in over 37 innings. Batters are hitting .120 off of him and he has struck 53 against 17 walks.
