South Bend man dies in fiery crash Wednesday

CONSTANTINE TWP. — The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office has reported that a 74-year-old man from South Bend, Indiana, died as a result of injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash Nov. 15.

The sheriff’s office did not release the identity of the man, listed as a passenger in the vehicle, nor the driver of the vehicle.

The crash occurred on North River Road near Quacker Road just after 7 p.m. Wednesday and a preliminary investigation showed the vehicle was eastbound on North River Road when the driver ran off the roadway and struck a tree causing the vehicle to ignite in flames.

Deputies arrived to find the vehicle fully engulfed in flames and quickly set to work to remove the man from the vehicle. He was taken a safe distance away where — with the assistance of other first responders — life-saving measures began, but were unsuccessful.
