SOUTH BEND — Mayor James Mueller underwent an unexpected surgery Friday and may remain in the hospital for multiple days, according to a press release.

The surgery, conducted by Memorial Hospital's cardiothoracic team, was reportedly successful, and the mayor is expected to make a full recovery. Cardiothoracic surgeons specialize in procedures involving the heart, lungs, esophagus and other organs in the chest.

The mayor's spokeswoman would not describe his condition beyond saying he is fine and expected to make a full recovery. He is expected to be released from the hospital in the coming days.

“James and I are incredibly grateful for the Memorial Hospital staff who have put him on a path toward a speedy recovery,” his wife, Kellye Mitros Mueller, said in a statement. “Today was a very personal reminder of how fortunate we are in South Bend to possess such world-class medical care in our city.”

Mueller, who became mayor in January 2020, turned 40 on Wednesday.
