SOUTH BEND — Construction begins Monday for plans to calm traffic on Angela Boulevard, the busy road that divides Notre Dame's campus from Eddy Street Commons and nearby neighborhoods.

The work starting Monday, which is to finish by mid-May, will add a multi-purpose path on the north side of Angela from Michigan Street (Indiana 933) to an existing sidewalk south of Burke Golf Course, between Stanfield and Pokagon streets.

A second phase of work from mid-May to mid-July will focus on the stretch of Angela between Notre Dame Avenue and Leahy Drive, close to Notre Dame Stadium. Curb bumpouts are to be built at three intersections with Angela — at Eddy Street, Joyce Drive and Leahy Drive — to slow average daily traffic of 15,000 vehicles and make the area safer for pedestrians. A traffic signal will also be added at the Joyce Drive intersection.

Once finished, crews will restripe Angela to make two travel lanes and a continuous left turn lane in the middle of the road. Surplus space from the four-lane section of the road will be used for on-street parking and landscaping.

Despite some restrictions, Angela will remain open to traffic during construction. Crews will halt work during special Notre Dame events such as Commencement, which takes place the weekend of May 15-17.

The nearly $3.3 million project's cost is split between the city of South Bend and Notre Dame. The city will pay about $1 million while Notre Dame pays $2.3 million.
