SOUTH BEND — A spring Citizens Police Academy is being offered for the first time for people who want to see and experience the different departmental functions of the South Bend Police Department.

Usually only offered in the fall, registration for the free course is open and the academy will run on Tuesdays from March 5 to May 7. There will be nine sessions over a 10-week period, with no class on the first Tuesday in April because of spring break. Classes are held on Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m.

People taking part will have hands-on interactive lessons from specialty units of the SBPD that involve patrol, the SWAT team, crime scene technicians, the bomb squad, hostage/crisis negotiators, the K-9 unit, the Real-Time Crime Center, narcotics enforcement, the detective bureau and communications.

Participants must be at least 18 and have to agree to a criminal background check.
