South Berwick resident Heather Brown latest local to appear on 'Jeopardy!' Here's how she did.

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — While on her honeymoon in Las Vegas, Heather Brown continued to refresh her email seeking one specific message: Confirmation from “Jeopardy!” showrunners on an audition for the show.

"About a month and a half before we got married, I’d done the first phase of the audition, the video test, so I had to bring the computer (and) check it obsessively because I didn’t want to miss my audition,” Brown said.

The anecdote was one the South Berwick resident told to Mayim Bialik, actor and “Jeopardy!” host, the episode that aired Thursday night. Brown, a civil servant, was the fourth person from the Seacoast New Hampshire and southern Maine region to compete on the show in 2022.

“I ended up not getting the audition call until about a month or two later, but I had to make sure,” Brown added. “I couldn’t miss it.”

Facing off against three-game returning champion Yungsheng Wang, a public defender from Los Angeles, and newcomer Brian Ahern, a user support associate from Daly City, California, Brown settled in and ended the opening round in second place.

Categories in the “Jeopardy!” round included questions about New York City boroughs, salad dressings, Ernest Hemingway, motor speedway facts and words that rhyme with “zone.”

Correctly answering clues about bed and breakfast businesses, thousand island dressing and a computer’s copy and paste function, Brown finished the first round with $3,600. Ahern led the contestants with $10,600 and Wang, who entered the contest having raked in $84,202 from the previous three games, sat in third with $2,000.

In the “Double Jeopardy!” round, the three contestants were posed questions regarding political leaders, four letter acronyms, chemistry, scarves, old newspapers and geography.

Brown correctly answered clues about French President Emmanuel Macron, the country of Georgia, Great Salt Lake in Utah, the Hartford Courant newspaper and musician instrument digital interface. The South Berwick resident’s final score at the round’s conclusion was $4,800, leaving her in third place. Wang stormed back to take the lead with $22,099 while Ahern closed “Double Jeopardy!” in second place with $13,400.

Bialik unveiled the “Final Jeopardy!” category, which was about literary characters on screen.

The clue asked: “Per Guinness, this character who debuted in 1887 is the most portrayed human literary character in film and television.”

Once the show’s famous tune concluded, Brown was the first of the trio to reveal her final answer. “Who is Scrooge?” was her incorrect guess, and because she wagered all her winnings, Brown dropped to $0.

Wang also answered wrong and bet $4,900, lowering his score to $17,199. Ahern, who also bet his entire game score, was crowned the winner of the episode by correctly answering “Who is Sherlock Holmes?” and finishing the game with $26,800.

On the famous fictional detective, Bialik told Brown and her two competitors, “He’s been depicted over 250 times by more than 75 actors.”

Though finishing the game empty-handed, Brown walked away with a $1,000 prize, the amount awarded to each third-place “Jeopardy!” finisher.
