South Brunswick woman dies following Route 1 crash: police

SOUTH BRUNSWICK – A 58-year-old township woman died following a crash Monday evening on Route 1.

According to police, Jennifer Rapp was driving a 2016 Hyundai Elantra north on Route 1 near the Independence Way intersection around 6 p.m. when her car left the roadway onto the grass and struck a utility pole. The force of the impact sent the Hyundai back onto the northbound lanes of Route 1 where it struck a 2004 Honda Odyssey being driven by a 72-year-old township man, police said.

Rapp suffered multiple injuries and was transported by South Brunswick EMS and paramedics to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where she died, police said.

The South Brunswick Police Traffic Safety Bureau was at the scene until midnight reconstructing the crash. Investigators are looking into if a medical episode or other reasoning can explain why the Hyundai left the roadway and struck the pole, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Patrolman First Class Bryan Sites at 732-329-4646.
