South Carolina football has a surprise addition to its 2023 signing class.

Former Georgia and Tennessee wide receiver DeAngelo Gibbs has joined the Gamecocks and is on campus, a team spokesperson confirmed to The State.

He’ll play his first college football season since 2018 with the Gamecocks, though it’s to be determined if he’ll be a wide receiver or a defensive back, the spokesperson said.

Gibbs signed with Georgia as the No. 4 safety and No. 49 overall recruit in the Class of 2017. The four-star recruit appeared in 13 games over two seasons as a defensive back and transferred to Tennessee ahead of the 2019 season.

Gibbs, who cross-trained at receiver and defensive back at Tennessee, redshirted the 2019 season to comply with the NCAA rules at the time. He also sat out the 2020 season to focus on academics, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel, and didn’t appear in any games in 2021.

After three seasons and zero games with the Volunteers, Gibbs entered the transfer portal again in May 2022. He didn’t sign anywhere, meaning he hasn’t appeared in a game since 2018.
