Circuit Judge Benjamin Culbertson presided over the sentencing. Griffin must serve at least 85% of his sentence.

Griffin had no prior criminal history at the time of the shooting, but he has since pleaded guilty to unrelated charges in North Carolina, according to the solicitor’s office.

The shooting happened on May 17, 2020, when two rival groups from the Chesterfield County area encountered each other on opposite sides of Ocean Boulevard, the solicitor’s office said. They started shooting at each other across and through traffic. An employee at a shop on the corner was shot but recovered.

Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune called the shooting incident “gang violence.”
