South Carolina man dead following crash on I-75 Friday morning

Oct. 20—Heavy rain early Friday morning is contributed to a two-vehicle crash on I-75 that injured three persons, took the life of a South Carolina man and shut down the interstate for three hours.

The Laurel County Sheriff's Office reported the accident took place around 1:43 a.m., eight miles south of London, when a gray Ford Expedition traveling in the southbound left passing lane during heavy rainfall and hydroplaned and crashed into the concrete barrier of the median. The Expedition then slid back into the left passing lane and struck an oncoming southbound Subaru Impreza.

The passenger in the Subaru, 24-year-old Bryan James Lowman of Spartanburg, South Carolina, was pronounced deceased at the scene by officials with the Laurel County Coroner's office. Lowman was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The occupants of the Ford Expedition were the driver, Robert Thomas Offer, 41, of Roseville, MI, and passenger, 67-year-old Christine Elizabeth Wnuk, of Ira, MI, both of whom were transported to Baptist Healthcare Hospital Corbin for treatment of injuries.

The driver of the Subaru was 58-year-old David Bryan Lowman, of Greenville, South Carolina. He was transported to St. Joseph Hospital London for treatment of injuries.

The southbound lane of I-75 was closed to allow investigation of the crash site.

Assisting at the scene were Laurel County Sheriff's Shift Sgt. Travis Napier and Deputy Joe Breeding, Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, West Knox Fire and Rescue, London Laurel Rescue Squad, Laurel County Fire Department and officials with Laurel County Coroner's Office. Also assisting on the investigation was London City Police.

The crash investigation is continuing by Laurel Sheriff's Deputy Brad Mink.
