COLUMBIA — After a tumultuous season with South Carolina football, ESPN's Pete Thamel reports that offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield plans to leave the Gamecocks to serve as Nebraska's offensive coordinator under newly-hired head coach Matt Rhule.

ESPN's Chris Low said Satterfield confirmed this morning that he accepted the job at Nebraska.

Rhule and Satterfield have a long history dating back to 2005 when both served as assistant coaches at Western Carolina. Rhule then hired Satterfield as his offensive coordinator at Temple in 2013 and as his tight ends coach at Baylor in 2018. Rhule also brought Satterfield to the NFL with him: The Gamecocks OC spent the 2020 season as an assistant offensive line coach for Rhule's Carolina Panthers.

Satterfield joined the Gamecocks' staff in 2021 after Shane Beamer was hired as the successor to fired head coach Will Muschamp. He had previously served as the offensive coordinator at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga from 2009-12 and at Temple from 2013-15. He was also the head coach at Tennessee Tech from 2016-17.

Per Thamel, South Carolina "made a strong push to keep Satterfield."

Satterfield's South Carolina offense finished the 2022 regular season eighth in the SEC in scoring, averaging 31.67 points per game, and ninth in overall yards with 4,572 total. The unit was the No. 5 passing offense in the conference but No. 12 in rushing yards.

Fans widely called for the second-year offensive coordinator to be fired after the team lost 23-10 to Missouri and 38-6 to Florida, but the Gamecocks (8-4, 4-4 SEC) rebounded with two of their best offensive performances to end the season on back-to-back upsets over then-No. 5 Tennessee and No. 8 Clemson.

"What a fighter he is, and he'll be the first to tell you we didn't coach well enough in the Florida and the Missouri game," Beamer said of Satterfield after the win at Clemson. "That is a fantastic defense we just played ... We knew it was going to be tough and ugly at times ... and Satt did a great job."

Satterfield's two-year contract at South Carolina expires at the end of 2022 since he did not receive an extension following the 2021 season. He was the second-highest-paid assistant on staff, making $900,000 per year.
