South Carolina pedestrian dies after being hit by a vehicle last week near New Castle

A 74-year-old South Carolina woman died Tuesday morning — nearly a week after being struck by a vehicle as she walked on New Castle Avenue (Route 9) north of New Castle.

Delaware State Police identified the pedestrian as Mireille Mathis of Greenville, South Carolina.

Mathis was walking across New Castle Avenue about 6:30 Wednesday evening when she was struck by a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee that was heading north on the roadway.

Mathis was taken to an area hospital in critical condition where she remained until dying from her injuries, said Senior Cpl. Leonard DeMalto, a police spokesperson.

Police continue to investigate the incident and ask that anyone who witnessed the crash to investigators at (302) 365-8484.
