South Carolina police: Man killed amid gunfire with officers

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a call reporting a domestic dispute at South Carolina's Sumter Mall resulted in the fatal shooting of a man in an exchange of gunfire with police.

Police responded to a call Saturday evening reporting a woman was afraid to leave the mall because an estranged boyfriend was seen outside pointing a gun at her vehicle, police spokeswoman Tonyia McGirt says.

A police statement identified the man as 35-year-old Waltki Cermoun Williams of Sumter, adding he drove off at high speed in an SUV with police pursuing. The statement says Williams crashed into two vehicles and fled on foot. It added a brief struggle ensued between Williams and police, followed by gunfire.

The number of officers involved wasn't disclosed, nor their race or Williams'.

No one else was injured.
