South Central earns key road win

Jan. 8—MANSFIELD — One night after ending a five-game losing streak, the South Central boys basketball team topped previous one-loss Mansfield Christian on the road in a 52-44 non-league victory Saturday night.

The Trojans (5-6) led 19-13 after one quarter, then they matched the Flames (9-2) with 16 points each for the next two quarters to take a 35-29 lead into the final eight minutes. South Central then held a slim 17-15 edge in the fourth quarter to claim the win.

Isaac Blair finished with 16 points for South Central, while Brandon Mitchell had 16 points and nine rebounds. Gunner Ray added eight points and seven rebounds, while Hayden Dobias added seven points and seven rebounds.

South Central (2-4) will host Mapleton (5-5, 4-3) in a Firelands Conference game on Thursday.

CASTALIA — Down a key starter, the Eagles suffered a tough loss at the buzzer to the host Polar Bears Saturday night in non-league play.

Tied at 45, Margaretta's Julian Washington hit the game-winning 3 as time expired to lift his team to 9-4 overall.

The Eagles (6-5) trailed 27-16 at halftime, but outscored the Bears by nine points in the third quarter to get back in the game.

Aidan Goodwin scored 20 points for the Eagles, with Jimmy Clingman scoring 11 and Braden Chapman adding 10.

Monroeville, which hosts New London on Thursday, played without Gabe Howell (10.4 points per game), who took a hard fall in a win over St. Paul on Jan. 6.

WILLARD — The Crimson Flashes outscored the Fliers by 18 points in the first quarter and never looked back in Saturday's non-league win that pushed them back to .500 overall.

The trio of Max Dawson, Cam Robinson and Isaac Robinson again did the heavy lifting for Willard. Dawson scored 27 points, while Cam Robinson had 23 and Isaac Robinson scored 19.

The Crimson Flashes (4-1 SBC Bay) have a huge game for first place in the league on Friday when they visit Margaretta (9-4, 4-1). Willard won the first meeting at home, 70-59, on Dec. 2.

NEW LONDON — After an 0-8 start, the Wildcats won for the second time in their last three games with Saturday's non-league win over the Spartans.

Trailing 32-26 at halftime, New London (2-9) outscored St. Peter's by 12 points (20-8) in the third quarter to pull away.

Gavin Carruthers scored a team-high 26 points for the 'Cats, who also got 23 points from Conner Byrd.

MILAN — The Chargers were unable to overcome a 10-point deficit after one quarter of Saturday's non-league loss to the Sailors.

Kayden Bourget scored a game-high 27 points and added five rebounds for Edison, which fell to 2-8. Bryson Wittmer added six points and seven rebounds, while Davin Wendt had four points and six rebounds.

Edison is scheduled to host Huron on Friday in SBC Bay Division play.
