South Central, Western compete in Envirothon

Apr. 26—NORWALK — Thirty-nine teams, including South Central and Western Reserve, competed Wednesday in the Ohio Area II Envirothon at Bronson-Norwalk Conservation Club.

The event is an Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation District event coordinated by ODA Division of Soil and Water Conservation and hosted by the Huron Soil and Water Conservation District.

The top four teams advance to the state competition in June at Defiance College with the nationals set for July 23 to 29 in New Brunswick, Canada.

Teams competed in five different stations — Soils, Forestry, Wildlife, Current Events and Aquatics. Teams are graded on each station to determine the winners.

"We have five eco stations, down in that revine is the soils pit and forestry, over there is wildlife, that is current events which is adapting to climate change and here at the gazebo is aquatic," said Alisa Highlander of the Huron SWCD.

Now in her 24th year with the SWCD, this is the third time the local group has hosted the event, Highlander said.

"This is a 17-county event in Northeast Ohio and we have a great turnout. And the weather is even better. What a great day for this," she added.

Winning the event were the Boardman Channel Cats, followed by Southeast Maroon in second, the Enviro Queens in third and the Boardman Steelheads in fourth.

Western Reserve had the top score in the forestry station and South Central was tops in the soils.
