Get ready for 24-hour closure along key West El Paso road
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Traffic exiting from eastbound I-10 to Transmountain Road, Artcraft Road, or Redd Road in West El Paso County will be detoured for approximately 24 hours early Monday. Nov. 20, according to TxDOT.

South Desert Boulevard will be closed to all traffic between Vinton Road and Los Mochis Drive from 6 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 20, until 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21.
TxDOT says this section of South Desert Boulevard is currently used as a detour route while Exits 6, 8, and 9 are closed for construction as part of the I-10 Widening West project.
Thru traffic on South Desert Boulevard will turn right on Spur 37 (Vinton Road), turn left on SH 20 (Doniphan Drive), and access their destination from Doniphan.
“We appreciate the patience of the traveling public and encourage motorists to allow extra time while traveling in this area during next week’s planned 24 hour closure,” said TxDOT Project Manager Jorge Oregel, P.E. “Traffic patterns will continue to change as crews make progress on this project which will improve mobility in our region by widening I-10 from two lanes to three lanes in each direction between North Mesa Street and Vinton and relocating on- and offramps to function more safely and efficiently.”
The 24-hour frontage road closure is necessary so crews can begin work on a retaining wall along South Desert Boulevard. Once that retaining wall is built, crews will be able to re-open more of South Desert Boulevard to two lanes south of Vinton Road, according to TxDOT.
While no other major closures are planned as part of this project over the Thanksgiving weekend, motorists should be aware of another extended closure of the I-10 mainlanes which is planned immediately after the holiday.
Eastbound I-10 will be closed to all traffic at Vinton Road from 9 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 27, until 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 29. All eastbound traffic on I-10 will be required to take Exit 2 (Spur 37/Vinton Road/Westway Drive) and continue on South Desert Boulevard before re-entering I-10 near Redd Road.
This closure is one in of a series of extended closures of the main lanes which are needed to allow new, wider concrete bridge decks to be built. For these bridge decks, the concrete must be poured and allowed to cure without vibrations from passing traffic, according to TxDOT.

I-10 Widening West
Monday, Nov. 20, at 6 a.m., through Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 6 a.m.
South Desert Boulevard will be closed to all traffic between Vinton Road and Los Mochis Drive.
DETOUR: Traffic bound for Los Mochis Drive, Transmountain Road, Artcraft Road, Redd Road, or Thorn Avenue must turn right on Spur 37 (Vinton Road), then turn left on SH 20 (Doniphan Drive) and reach their destination from Doniphan.
Crews will update the traffic pattern on South Desert to allow for the construction of a retaining wall.
Beginning Monday, Nov. 27, at 6 a.m.
The temporary on-ramp from South Desert Boulevard to eastbound I-10 near Canutillo High School will close permanently.
DETOUR: Continue on South Desert Boulevard to the temporary on-ramp near Redd Road.
Crews will begin construction of a new temporary off-ramp.
Monday, Nov. 27, at 9 p.m., through Wednesday, Nov. 29, at 9 a.m.
Eastbound I-10 will be closed to all traffic at Vinton Road.
DETOUR: Take Exit 2 (Spur 37/Vinton Road/Westway Drive), continue on South Desert Boulevard, and re-enter I-10 past Transmountain Road.
Crews will be pouring a new concrete bridge deck and allowing it to cure.
The following closures will continue until further notice:
Eastbound I-10 is reduced to one lane from north of Transmountain Road to Redd Road.
Westbound I-10 is reduced to one lane from Redd Road to north of Transmountain Road.
Eastbound offramps for Transmountain Road, Artcraft Road, and Redd Road are closed, detour via Exit 2 (Spur 37/Vinton Road/Westway Drive) to South Desert Boulevard.
The direct connector ramp from westbound Loop 375 (Transmountain Road) to eastbound I-10 is closed to all traffic.
Alternating daytime lane closures are possible on North Desert Boulevard and South Desert Boulevard between Redd Road and Anthony, Texas.
Guardrail Repair Project
