Will South Florida break another heat record? Here’s what the forecast says

After numerous “excessive heat warnings” for Miami-Dade, including Monday’s alert, a regular heat advisory like Tuesday’s almost feels a relief.

Don’t get complacent, however. Heat illnesses and fatalities do still occur when the humidity makes the “feels like” heat index remain in the triple digits and the regular temperature flirts with records — which is the case on Tuesday.

Here’s what you need to know.

Heat advisory period for South Florida

The National Weather Service in Miami’s heat advisory was extended through 8 p.m. Wednesday. The expected index is 108, two degrees below the 110 degree threshold Miami-Dade officials require before issuing an excessive heat warning.

The advisory applies to inland, metro and far south Miami-Dade and includes Kendale Lakes, Homestead, Hialeah, Kendall, Carol City, Miami, Mahogany Hammock and Royal Palm Ranger, according to the weather service.

The same advisory applies to inland, metro and coastal Broward County, due to a 108 heat index expectation but is through 8 p.m. Tuesday. Locales include the Miccosukee Indian Reservation, Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, Coral Springs, Sawgrass Mills Mall, Sunrise, Davie, Miramar, Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach.

Heat advisory period for Florida Keys

The National Weather Service in Key West issued a heat advisory for the island chain Tuesday until 7 p.m. A heat index of 112 is possible.

“To reduce risk during outdoor work the Occupational Safety and Heath Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency — call 911,” Keys meteorologist Travis Washington wrote in the advisory.
