South Florida’s Prison Pals Brewing Co. makes news in Argentina (thanks to Messi)

Argentina is having a ball with the news that beloved son Lionel Messi is headed to our Major League Soccer team, Inter Miami.

Media outlets there — capitalizing on the fact that residents of this South American nation love to vacation here — are already covering the story from every angle.

Case in point: The daily sports newspaper, Diario Deportivo Ole, this week spotlighted South Florida’s Prison Pals Brewing Co., where a group of Argentines have crafted an homage to the “Greatest Of All Time.”

Their special-edition GOAT premium lager six-pack bears the distinctive pink and black colors of the Inter Miami uniform and Messi’s jersey number (10).

“The reality is that it has a very nice design, when you see it it really hits you,” brewery co-owner Juan Pipkin told Ole. “Since it went on the market, 400 cases of beer have been sold in two days. It was a success.”

Prison Pals has taprooms in Miami and Oakland Park. Beers are created in their Doral brewhouse and sold on draft and in cans at locations including ABC Fine Wine and Spirits, Total Wine and Graziano’s Argentine markets. (Prices vary.)

Following in the footsteps of their idol Messi, who won the FIFA World Cup in December 2022, Prison Pals this past May received top honors at the 2023 World Beer Cup — placing third for its Nelson Hazy IPA. Their menu features names like La Colorada Amber Lager, Dorada Pampeana Blonde, and Hakuna Matata and Katy Berry smoothie-style concoctions.

The Messi can is not their first dedicated to “fútbol.” D10S is a Mexican-style lager whose can sports the likeness and jersey number (also 10) of late Argentine legend Diego Maradona.

Prison Pals’ next goal — a taste-test from Messi himself — could require a big commitment.

“It would be great if Leo could try our beer, a dream come true,” Pipkin added in Ole. “If No. 10 were to ask, I’d gift him a truckload of beer, no problem. One, two, or however many truckloads he wants, ha. We’ll do anything for No. 10 to be comfortable and happy here.”
