South Forks Lions donate proceeds from annual golf event to Lowell Schweigert Endowment Fund

Aug. 6—GRAND FORKS — The South Forks Lions Club has donated $8,400 to the Lowell Schweigert Endowment Fund, which is administered by the UND Alumni Association and Foundation.

Funds for the donation were raised at the Second Annual Lions on the Links golf event held earlier this summer at Kings Walk Golf Course. The event was held in memory of long-time and active South Forks Lions Club members, Lowell Schweigert and Wayne Westlund.

The endowment, which was established in 2020, is used to fund a scholarship for a UND football student-athlete.

The golf event, which has been sold out both years, featured 36, four-person teams. At this year's event, nearly $20,000 was raised, with $8,400 given to the Schweigert Endowment Fund and the remainder will go to community charities and programs, said Bryon Novotny, club member.

The Lions on the Links golf event was established last year to honor Schweigert and Westlund, both of whom were extremely active in the Grand Forks community, said Novotny. The event was created "to recognize and remember their selfless commitment to bettering our community."

"For two years in a row, the event sold out within a short time after opening it up, another example of what these two (men) meant to our community," he said.

The South Forks Lions Club, which donates between $30,000 and $40,000 each year to important community causes, is part of Lions International, the largest service organization in the world, Novotny said.
