South Georgia cooling off

Oct. 13—VALDOSTA — Cooler weather is on the way to South Georgia, forecasters said Friday.

Skies over Valdosta were expected to clear up over the weekend, from mostly cloudy on Friday to sunny by Monday, according to the National Weather Service's forecast.

As the skies cleared, temperatures are expected to drop as a cold front moves through on Sunday, said Mike Doll, senior meteorologist with the private forecasting firm AccuWeather.

Daytime highs in Tifton and Valdosta were expected to drop from the low 80s Saturday to the mid 60s Monday.

The cause is a cold front expected to sweep through the area Sunday, said Wright Dobbs, a meteorologist with the weather service's Tallahassee, Fla., office.

"Things are going to cool off pretty significantly," he said.

Cool air in the Plains states and the Midwest will sweep into the Southeast behind the front, Doll said.

Normally, the average high for Valdosta for this time of year is 80 degrees, he said, "so we're significantly behind the historical average."

Likewise, overnight lows are expect to drop from the low 60s Friday to the mid-40s Monday, forecasts show.

Both meteorologists said the next good chance for rain in South Georgia will be next weekend when another storm system moves through the region. Until then, Valdosta shows no rain chances in the NWS forecast.

Both forecasters also said severe weather is not expected in South Georgia for the next week.
