South girls open with win
Dec. 28—HICKORY — The South Caldwell girls' basketball team prevailed in the opening round of the 35th-annual Dick's Sporting Goods Classic.
The Lady Spartans defeated Fred T. Foard 61-32 on Tuesday at Tarlton Complex.
South jumped out to an 18-8 lead after one period, was on top 30-13 at halftime and 42-22 heading in the final quarter.
"I thought we played well last night." Lady Spartans coach Jeff Parham said. "Great team win. Proud of the ladies' effort."
South (9-3) faced undefeated Alexander Central (10-0) in Wednesday's semifinals.
The Spartan boys were taken down by Newton-Conover 59-49.
Caleb Greene paced South with 21 points and seven rebounds. Tyler Eggars totaled 14 points and 13 boards.
The Spartans (6-6) dropped into the losers' bracket to play Bunker Hill (1-8). iver
