South girls roll over Huskies

Apr. 4—WEST JEFFERSON — South Caldwell's softball team stepped back on the diamond for the first time since its gut-wrenching loss last week to eighth-ranked Alexander Central for the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference lead.

The Lady Spartans, No. 9 in the state, returned to their old form.

South blasted Ashe County 17-2 on Monday in five innings.

"Offensively, it was an all-around team effort," said Casey Justice, coach of the Lady Spartans, "with our offense coming from everyone. Great plate discipline and base running."

Kadie Decker (three innings) and Kenzie Clontz (one inning) combined on a four-hitter in striking out five Lady Huskies (6-3, 2-2).

South (8-2, 3-1) held a commanding 12-0 advantage in the third inning. The Lady Spartans finished with a flurry, punching in five runs in the fourth to complete the onslaught.

Ashe's Becka Wonsick batted 2 for 2 with a home run and a pair of RBIs.

Ally Greer lasted 2 1/3 innings for the Lady Huskies, serving up three hits and eight earned runs while walking 12. Maleah Lowell was in the circle for 2 2/3 innings yielding four hits, five earned runs and walking five.

In the Region 4A-West poll, Alexander and South are ranked second and third, respectively. The rematch is two weeks from Friday in Taylorsville.
