South Jersey woman slain in Philadelphia office building

PHILADELPHIA - A South Jersey woman was fatally attacked in a downtown office building, police say.

Samantha "Sami" Maag, 31, of Gloucester Township was beaten with pipes Wednesday afternoon on the eighth floor of a building on the 300 block of Chestnut Street, according to an account from Philadelphia police.

A Philadelphia man, 49-year-old Jeffrey Stepien, was arrested at the scene a short time later.

Police officers found Maag, a resident of the Blenheim area, around 2:15 p.m. after responding to an initial report of a robbery in progress at the Regus office-rental building in Old City, the account said.

Maag, who suffered severe head injuries, was pronounced dead at a downtown hospital around an hour later.

Police encountered Stepien, who was holding two pipes, and arrested him without incident, the account said.

It said investigators have witness accounts and surveillance video of the incident.

Stepien is charged with murder and a weapons offense.

The charges against him are allegations; Stepien has not been convicted of any crimes in this case.

The attack occurred at a building, operated by IWG, that provides office and co-working space, as well as meeting rooms.

"We are all shocked and devastated by what happened and are focused on fully supporting our colleagues and customers at this difficult time”, said Mark Dixon, IWG's chief executive officer.
