South Kitsap High School boys basketball coach Anthony Lewis was the victim of a shooting incident while traveling on Interstate 5 during the weekend, according to an email provided by district spokesperson Amy Miller.

The email, sent by South Kitsap High School Principal Dave Goodwin to staff on Sunday, described Lewis as being badly injured when a person/persons traveling in another vehicle fired shots at Anthony's car. Friend Kiara Maxwell, who started a GoFundMe account to help with Lewis' medical expenses, noted that Lewis recently began a job helping at-risk youth in Kent. Lewis was driving home after work when the shooting occurred.

"This caused his vehicle to leave the road and caused even more physical injury to Anthony," Goodwin's email said. "Luckily, a good Samaritan was able to assist getting Anthony the medical help he needed to get to the (emergency room)."

Goodwin noted that Lewis is in stable condition (he is recovering at Tacoma General Hospital) but that the coach "is going to have a long recovery. He will need our support in this painful process that I am sure has impacted him beyond just his physical injuries."

Lewis joined South Kitsap's coaching staff as girls varsity basketball coach for the 2022-23 season. He transitioned to boys varsity basketball coach this winter.
